How I Designed Our Nursery

When I found out I was pregnant, I immediately started to think about designing our nursery. When we moved into our home in 2021, we had the interior professionally painted two colors - Behr "Downtown Grey" and Behr "Dolphin Fin". I wanted to keep whatever theme we chose to coordinate with the light grey walls to avoid repainting it.

After a few weeks, I decided on a jungle theme, mostly comprised of whites and gray, with some wicker accents. The artwork above the crib is what I used as an inspiration for all the decorations.

Here is an overview of our nursery and some tips I've found to be super helpful almost a year in!

Furniture

DaVinci Baby - Charlie crib, dresser, changing tray

Glider & Ottoman (it served it's purpose but I don't recommend it)

3 Tier Wicker Basket - no longer available from World Market, similar

Linens

Bed Skirt - no longer available from Pottery Barn

Curtains - no longer available from World Market

Curtain Rod - no longer available from World Market

Decorations

Wicker Toy Baskets - no longer available from Michaels, similar

Elephant Wall Hooks - no longer available from Home Depot, similar

Lunbar Pillow - no longer available from World Market, similar

Helpful Tips for Nursery Setup:

  • the wicker storage next to our changing station has been very helpful to have extra diapers, wipes, and supplies. The worst thing is when you are mid change and realize you forgot to restock something!

  • for morning and evening feeds, having the ottoman and tray to hold coffee, breakfast, medicine, etc made it easy to multitask.

  • we ended up putting paper blackout shades in the windows and pulling the shades closed instead of purchasing bulky or overpriced blackout curtains.

  • we purchased a second universal changing tray for our bedroom in espresso that matches the dresser to have a changing station on each floor - our master bedroom is on the main level. This has been extremely helpful!

  • in the first few weeks, we also used disposable baby changing pads on the changing cushion. Now, we just have a changing mat that we can easily wipe down.

  • For a few items, I found some major savings google image searching from inspiration. One example - the round mirror I purchased from Home Depot was over $100 cheaper than Pottery Barn!

  • we definitely use all the drawers in the full size chest of drawers we purchased. I ended up storing extra sheets and water proof mattress cover, burp cloths, night sacks, changing pad covers, and pajamas.

  • one item I stressed to figure out was a laundry basket which we literally never use. We take down her laundry daily, but as she gets older, we may use it more.

Not pictured but worth mentioning:

  • we do have a baby monitor that is connected to the crib. We went with this one from Eufy because it is not connected to wifi for privacy reasons. We use this to attach it which is great since we travel with it.

  • we have these organizers in her closet, which is helpful since I do purchase a few sizes up.

  • I mentioned above, but I went with a cheaper glider (still $500, ugh), but it ended up falling apart - the arm somewhat detached from the chair. Thankfully I purchased insurance from Wayfair with Allstate so I was refunded, but I wish we had originally invested in a nicer one since we use it every night with her!

Just like creating a recipe or feeding your little one, a spoon can be difficult to balance.  I hope to share ideas and experiences to help you find balance across varyious things - healthy living, intentional movement, or being a new parent!
